Alex Prager is an American photographer and filmmaker who lives and works in Los Angeles and New York City. She is self-taught, having received no formal training in photography. In 2010, Prager was selected as one of four artists to be included in the prestigious New Photography 2010 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). Characterized by deeply saturated colors, heightened drama, and dark humor, Prager's film noir inspired portraits of women hint at narrative subtexts while maintaining a sense of ambiguity and self-contained emotional intensity. Her work draws from a diverse group of influences, including pulp fiction, the cinematic style of David Lynch and Alfred Hitchcock, and fashion photography, as well as contemporary artists such as William Eggleston, Cindy Sherman, and Gregory Crewdson. Her three major bodies of work - Polyester (2007), Big Valley (2008), and Weekend (2009) - have been shown by galleries in Los Angeles, New York, London and Tokyo. Her work has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, and W Magazine, among others and has been acquired by the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), Whitney Museum of American Art, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), North Carolina Museum of Art, Cincinnati Art Museum, and Kunsthaus Zurich.
